NanoEntrepreneurs Workshop and Pitch Competition 28th January 2014

The Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN - www.nanoktn.com), one of the UK's primary knowledge-based networks for Micro and Nanotechnologies, is pleased to announce its next NanoEntrepreneurs Workshop on the 28th January 2014, in partnership with Covington & Burling LLP.

Commercialising nanotechnologies often involves a long term commitment which requires significant tenacity and patience to connect, create, and develop the correct supply chains. There is also a requirement to demonstrate market acceptability and to demonstrate benefit in real product performance often with complete new paradigms of technology and manufacture. When successful, significant long term benefits can be realised for the economy including growth, jobs and confidence. The path to commercialisation starts by knowing and mastering the instruments of business (financing, IP protection and management development). This is crucial if the UK is going to expand the SME base to allow for accelerated growth in the recovering economy.

This half day workshop will discuss what it takes to commercialise micro and nanoscale research and development and is a must attend event for entrepreneurs from the academic and commercial arenas who have an interest and commitment in realising the value of UK research, and individuals who provide support services which enable rapid and trustworthy commercialisation.

A pitch competition has been launched which will provide the three winning entrepreneurs with the opportunity to present their ideas for commercialisation of micro and nanoscale research and development at this event. The winners will give a short pitch explaining the commercial opportunities of their inventions, and then receive interactive feedback from the audience. The three winner applicants will also receive a ticket to the NanoKTN's table at the UK Business Angels Association (BAA) Winter Networking Dinner taking place at The Royal Society after this event. The deadline for applications is Friday 17th January 2014.

Dr James Johnstone, Theme Manager at the NanoKTN comments, "The commercialisation of emerging micro- and nanoscale technologies has been gathering momentum with a number of UK companies raising funds and expanding operations recently. There is certainly more to be done in exploiting the value of UK research in this sector and it needs the continued support from the financial community. This event is designed to be interactive, friendly and the basis of new exciting commercial collaborations, with opportunities to mingle with seasoned experts in the sector and also gain specific information on key aspects of micro- and nanotechnology commercialisation."

Established by the Technology Strategy Board, the NanoKTN is managed by Centre for Process Innovation Ltd, a leading technology development and consulting company.
