NanoKTN Announces Graphene and Nanofillers for Composites Workshop - 5th December 2013

The Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN - www.nanoktn.com), one of the UK's primary knowledge-based networks for Micro and Nanotechnologies, is pleased to announce the programme for its Graphene and Nanofillers for Composites workshop sponsored and hosted by the National Composites Centre in Bristol, on the 5th December 2013.

The event will feature expert presentations on the latest developments in the manufacturing and properties of nanocomposites for polymers and composite systems, focusing on nanofillers including graphene. The workshop will include a discussion on the opportunities, issues and market barriers and provide an excellent networking opportunity to form partnerships.

Graphene has recently emerged as one of the most significant nanomaterials with exceptional mechanical, electrical, thermal, and other claimed functional properties. In 2010, two scientists from at Manchester University shared the year's Nobel Prize for Physics for their ground breaking research work on graphene. Since then the UK Government has funded University research centres, and UK spin-outs are currently scaling up to volume production of flake graphene.

Dr Martin Kemp, Theme Manager at the NanoKTN comments, "Graphene continues to be a very significant area of interest for the NanoKTN, and with unprecedented amount of public funding granted for research into applications of graphene, the NanoKTN has been very active in supporting the commercialisation of this wonder material. In March this year, we held two Graphene Industrial Consultation Workshops to obtain industry opinion on the commercial future of graphene, and earlier this month, we sponsored the HVM Graphene event in Cambridge to discuss the applications of graphene and its barriers to deployment."

"Nanomaterials are gaining wider use as fillers in polymers and macrocomposites to infer beneficial properties such as electrical and thermal conductivity, fire retardency, self-healing, and improved mechanical properties. The UK has a leading position in nanomaterials' research and we hope that delegates at the event will be able to find collaborative partners to remove barriers to growth and help stimulate commercial success in this exciting growth area for the UK."

The event programme will be introduced by Dr Dan Kells, Research Manager at the National Composites Centre and will include presentations from EADS Innovation Works, Applied Graphene Materials, WMG University of Warwick, University of Manchester - National Graphene Institute, NetComposites Ltd, Haydale Ltd and the Advanced Technology Centre, BAE Systems.

The programme will be complemented by technology pitches from both industrialists and academics including Alstom Grid, Carbodeon, National Physical Laboratory, Fullerex Limited, and the Universities of Bath and Cambridge.
