New Ex-pendant LED light fittings combine safety, reliability and energy efficiency

COOPER Crouse-Hinds has launched an innovative range of explosion-protected LED pendant light fittings/floodlights for Zone 2 hazardous gas areas. The light fittings are manufactured in accordance with the European Directive (ATEX) and IECEx standards and provide a unique combination of high energy efficiency, safety and reliability.

The new Champ NVMV LED range of light fittings is designed for general illumination duties at medium and high suspension heights in harsh, hazardous environments, particularly onshore and offshore oil and gas installations and chemical plants. Compared to traditional, equivalent incandescent, mercury vapour or sodium vapour lamps, the Champ NVMV LED can reduce energy costs by up to 58 per cent.

The Champ NVMV LED light fitting is currently available in three power classes: from 70W up to 98W. By mid-2012, the second generation will also be available, which will include 47W (3L) and 137W (11L) versions. The lamps can be wall, ceiling, pole or pendant-mounted.

The Champ NVMV LED offers a number of innovations and technical benefits for end users. As Klaus Weyer, Product Manager LED Lighting at COOPER Crouse-Hinds GmbH states: "The Champ NVMV LED light fitting is a significant milestone in terms of LED lamps for hazardous gas areas. The lamps offer energy savings, high light output and long operating life, combined with an environmentally-friendly, mercury and UV-free design. It is becoming increasingly important to operators of oil & gas installations, for example, to source light fittings that are not only more energy efficient, but also kinder to the environment. The Champ LED is dark-sky compliant and so does not distract birds."

Housed in a light alloy IP66 enclosure, the Champ NVMV LED is approved up to temperature class T5, with operating ambient temperatures from -40 deg C to +55 deg C. The light fitting has a heat- and impact-resistant cover and is shock and vibration-resistant, enabling the units to be installed safely in oil & gas drilling rigs and ships. The light fittings provide optimised light distribution for mid- and high-level lighting installations and have a rated life of 60,000 hours continuous operation. As Klaus Weyer puts it: "The Champ NVMV LED offers a very low cost of ownership compared to more traditional forms of lighting. A long life expectancy results in reduced maintenance costs for the operator, which is so important these days, particularly if you have thousands of light fittings to maintain. The lamps also have no filaments or glass components that can break, which greatly reduces the risk of premature failure."

In terms of its design features and technical advantages, the Champ NVMV LED provides sveral stand-out benefits. By using a compact, modular design, installation, retrofitting and replacement of the LED lamp is fast and simple. The lamps are installed in the same way as existing Champ series lamps and modularity of lamp components enables easier part replacement and future upgrades.

The solid-state electronics driver module is designed to provide relaible operation, even in harsh environments. Various AC and DC input voltage options are available to suit almost any drive requirement. In addition, a unique heat sink vertical fin design facilitates airflow and dust shedding, whilst ensuring safe, reliable heat dissipation. A durable fin extrusion ensures effective heat transfer from the LED assembly to the external environment, resulting in low LED junction temperatures, higher reliability and sustained lumen performance.

The LED housing itself is made from durable die cast aluminium, providing an efficient thermal path to the heat sink assembly. The impact-resistant lens is sealed from the outside conditions, providing ingress protection (IP66) from water and dust. Multi-die LED arrays are used to provide energy-efficient, long life white light.

Other options available on the Champ NVMV LED include a quick-clip for rapid installation; diffuse lens that reduces glare in applications where the user may have direct visual contact with the light source; Teflon coating on the lens for added to prevent shattering of the glass; and a polycarbonate lens for applications where the use of glass is prohibited.

As a leading manufacturer of light fittings for use in hazardous gas and dust areas, Cooper Crouse-Hinds has invested millions of pounds in establishing its own LED R&D centre in the USA. Built in 2008, this centre combines the LED efforts of all the various COOPER lighting divisions into one common LED platform, using this know-how to build reliable LED lighting systems and to constantly remain on top of this emerging technology.
