New key-plug for Scalance X-500

Key-Plug X-500Nuremberg, Germany. A new key-plug launched by the Siemens Industry Automation Division upgrades Scalance X-500 Industrial Ethernet switches for layer 3 functionality.
The new key-plug X-500 has opened up layer 3 functionality for the Scalance XR528-6M and Scalance XR552-12M switches of the X-500 Scalance product line, simply by enabling a license without the need for any other hardware or firmware changes. This means that a Scalance X-500 with layer 2 capability can be up graded for layer 3 (in accordance with the OSI model) if required, allowing the network to be flexibly expanded without any additional product purchase.
Layer 3 functional features available using the key-plug include for instance VLAN(Virtual Local Area Network), real time communication over Profinet, diagnostic functions and ring redundancy, optional routing with over 4000 hardware routers and 127 routing interfaces.
