Next-generation Valmet DNAe DCS to strengthen gas boiler operations at Lenzing in Austria

Valmet’s long-time customer Lenzing AG, an Austrian global leader in dissolving wood pulp and regenerated cellulose fibers, is upgrading their Lenzing production site by incorporating a complete Valmet DNAe Distributed Control System (DCS) to the 1K6 gas boiler. The new system will replace an obsolete third-party system, enabling state-of-the-art DNAe technology with long-term availability, highest cybersecurity standards, improved reliability, and future-ready platform capabilities. As a mission-critical solution, it ensures continued safe, secure, and high-performance plant operations.

Valmet and Lenzing AG have a long-term automation partnership dating back to the 1990s, when the first Damatic XDi DCS was delivered to the pulp mill and boilers. In the following decades, the installed base has steadily expanded, including four turbines fully automated with Valmet DNA. The cooperation has continuously evolved through generations of Valmet’s automation systems. Today, this long-standing collaboration culminates in the latest Valmet DNAe platform, representing the most advanced stage of the shared automation journey.

“Our long-term cooperation with Valmet is based on over 30 years of successful experience and is now evolving towards Valmet DNAe DCS. The continuous development of the system has enabled further improvements in plant maintainability and operational efficiency. The 1K6 boiler is the only third-party system in this area of the facility, and now we aim to standardize the control room under Valmet’s DCS platform. Our goal is to implement a system with the longest possible lifecycle, combined with state-of-the-art technology and the proven reliability of decades of successful collaboration,” says Project Manager Thomas Grabler, Lenzing AG.

“We are proud to deliver Valmet’s latest-generation DNAe DCS to our long-standing customer Lenzing AG. It is rewarding to witness our customer’s satisfaction and confidence in our technology, reflected in the steady expansion of the installed automation base over the decades. In addition to proven automation technology, we know that the customer values close partnership and excellent service, supported by our strong local presence and close collaboration. Building on this strong foundation, the new system will further strengthen the plant’s operational excellence and improve lifecycle availability,” says Mustafa Began, Service Area Manager, Automation Solutions business area, Valmet.
