Nine young designers and engineers in shortlist for The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering's 'Create the Trophy' Competition

Nine aspiring UK engineers and designers have been named in the final of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering's 'Create the Trophy' competition, following a competition across the UK and Northern Ireland.17 to 24 year olds across the UK and Northern Ireland were challenged to design an iconic trophy that represents the wonder of modern engineering. Shortlisted designs were chosen from a record number of entries. The nine shortlisted designs are now in competition to be selected as the winning design by the Create the Trophy competition judges. The winning designer will see his or her trophy presented in 2015 to the winners of the worlds' most prestigious engineering prize: the £1m Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.
The nine finalists, including six men and three women, come from all over the United Kingdom. All finalists are still in education with two entrants in their final year at school.
The finalists are:

James Rogers, 19 - Holbeton
Gemma Pollock,18 - Wakefield
Sarah Parsons, 22 - Rugby
Georgia Boulter, 19 - Ashby-de-la-Zouch
Joseph Waggott, 17 - Jarrow
Franz Gross - Liverpool
The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering is offering the British public the opportunity to join the Create the Trophy competition judges in selecting the winning trophy design. The public are invited to visit the QEPrize Facebook page and vote for their favourite design. The people's vote will become the seventh judge on the Create the Trophy competition judging panel, and will contribute to the final decision of the judges.
The QEPrize Trophy Competition judges, who are leading figures in design, engineering and science, will meet to select the winning design on 29 September. The winner of the Create the Trophy competition will also receive £2000.
The Create the Trophy competition judges are:

Mark Miodownik - Materials scientist and broadcaster

The Create the Trophy competition this year attracted an excellent field of entries from young designers and engineers from around the UK. We have an outstanding shortlist of designs reflecting the creativity and talent of the young people in this country. The judges will have a difficult task in selecting a winner but I have every confidence that they will make an excellent choice"
