The Siemens Drive Technologies Division has upgraded the performance of Profinet within the Motion Control System Simotion. By reducing the bus cycle time to a minimal 31.25 μs, extremely fast motion control applications can be implemented, while at the same time increasing productivity and maintaining high product quality. The short processing cycle provides adequate performance reserves for high- performance machines, particularly in the packaging and tobacco industries.

The shortened bus cycle was specifically developed for motion control applications that require fast terminal-to-terminal responses, and is based on the Profinet specifi- cation in version 2.3. This has defined mechanisms which make communication with Profinet even faster. One of these mechanisms is "Fast Forwarding", which reduces the throughput time in the switches to 1.2 μs, and increases the communication speed in line structures. The "Dynamic Frame Packaging" mechanism combines in a single telegram the I/O data of several devices connected in line, which reduces the communication overhead. All nodes use the bandwidth optimally by dynamically adapting the telegram. The third mechanism, "Fragmentation", enables the cycle time to be reduced without restricting the standard communication. All in all, the shortened bus cycle of 31.25 μs facilitates a highly precise cycle and a faster data rate within the Siemens Simotion Motion Control System. At Hannover Messe Siemens will be presenting an exhibition model demonstrating the high performance reserves. On the exhibition model, a golf ball flying through the air at about 10 meters per second is detected as it flies and is then caught pre- cisely in a catching device powered by two highly dynamic linear drives. The Trace diagnostic function integrated in Simotion enables the response time to be visual- ized. This diagnostic function is made available by the Simotion Web server. An external PC can access this data via the same bus which acquires the sensor signal and controls the linear drives.
