20 years of Sitop - 20 years of innovationNuremberg, Germany. Sold in their millions with a successful track record to match: The Sitop product family has been instrumental in shaping the industrial power supply market for over 20 years. The success story began with the launch of the"Sitop power basic line" in 1993. Its unique selling proposition: a stabilized power supply for automation applications with the same price tag as an unstabilized equivalent.
The Sitop success story begins with an innovation. In 1993, Siemens launched a new series of power supplies with a stabilized 24 V output voltage in five different versions for 2, 5, 10, 20 and 40 amps all neatly packaged in a compact, easy-to-mount casing. Based on this underlying concept, the Sitop product family went on to shape the market and to lay the foundation for a further 20 years of innovations.
These included the first uninterruptible 24 V DC power supply (DC-UPS) using batteries, launched as the energy storage Sitop in 1996. This allowed the controlled shutdown of connected machines in case of a power failure, so protecting the plant from damage and averting any danger for operating personnel. In 2006, Siemens unveiled the UPS500, a DC- UPS capable of working with maintenance-free capacitors instead of conventional lead-acid batteries for the first time.
After around ten years in the market place and a series of other pioneering developments such as LOGO!Power, a flat power supply for distribution boards, or Sitop select for the electronic protection of 24 V DC load circuits, Siemens had already sold over 1 million Sitop power supplies. 2009 marked the delivery of its ten millionth power supply a Sitop modular. The industrial power supplies of the Sitop range are developed and produced in the Siemens factory in Vienna. In 2005, a further production facility was added in Sibiu, Romania.
In its jubilee year 2013, Siemens is presenting yet another benchmark innovation in the form of the Sitop UPS1600: The first DC uninterruptible power supply with Ethernet interfaces. Sitop UPS1600 can be integrated into Ethernet networks, or into a TIA (Totally Integrated Automation) environment via Profinet. The unique benefits for users: Simple engineering and diagnosis of the DC-UPS, whether in open or system-integrated applications.
