Preparing for the zombie apocalypse
21/10/2021 Finning UK & Ireland
Since the film Shaun of the Dead, we now know that during a zombie apocalypse, the survival process involves taking your housemate’s car, driving over to your mum’s house, killing your infected stepdad, going to the pub and waiting for everything to blow over. Ahead of Halloween 2021, and in case of a real zombie apocalypse, Finning UK & Ireland has written some survival tips of its own. Leigh Hawkins, Equipment Manager for Energy and Transportation at Finning UK & Ireland, explains.
One of Shaun of the Dead’s most iconic scenes is Simon Pegg talking us through how he and his housemate Ed’s survival plan. However, one thing Shaun forgot was the need for a reliable power supply to help keep the lights on, and the pub running.
Luckily, Finning has been doing some planning of its own and has one important rule — always have a back-up. This doesn’t mean a back-up plan — but a back-up generator — so that survivors can maintain a constant power supply and weather any zombie attack. If they have a standby generator set in their home or garage, survivors could play video games, stream movies and keep stockpiled food frozen, to regain the energy they need to fight zombies.
The new Finning zombie check list includes:
- A metal baseball bat: This really is the simplest way to defend yourself against zombies. Unlike a wooden bat, a metal alternative will be more durable in the post-apocalyptic environment, where mass manufacturing will stop as soon as the mains power supply fails.
- A Cat® standby diesel generator set: Currently, diesel gensets are popular in healthcare, data centres and other industrial environments, but not in ordinary houses – to beat zombies, we need to change that. Only by bringing them into our homes (and pubs!) can we overcome mass blackouts and maintain a reliable power supply. Make sure you have enough fuel to see you through until it all blows over!
- A water purifier: Don’t forget, when the power stations go down so will the water utilities network, leaving you without a source of clean water. Next time you go shopping, put purifying tablets at the top of your list.
- A trusty drone: To stay one step ahead, consider using a drone. It can help you navigate the streets of zombie hordes and identify safe places to stay hidden.
Zombie apocalypse or not, Finning has the knowledge and expertise to recommend a generator set that will help keep the lights on when the grid goes down. For more information on reliable standby power, visit our easy power site https://easypower.cat.com/finninguk/.
