RMI's S500 pump system offers increased reliability and reduced maintenance requirements

RMI Pressure Systems Ltd. is one of the world's leading manufacturers of high-pressure, high-flow pumping systems for use in mining, offshore and industrial applications. Its latest Quinmax S500 modular pumping system uses an advanced five plunger design which reduces mechanical pressure on internal parts for increased reliability and reduced maintenance requirements. It's the ideal solution for applications in remote locations where access is awkward and the cost of unplanned downtime is expensive.

The Quinmax S500 pump is the latest addition to the industry leading S-Series of crankshaft driven reciprocating pumps from RMI. Unlike the more traditional 3 plunger design, the S500 features a five piston crankshaft which allows it to pump higher flow rates (340 - 1080Ltr/min) at greater pressure (190 - 1000Bar) with reduced loads on the shaft and bearings for greater periods before service intervals. The range is driven by 300 - 400kW motors and feature ram diameters spanning from 50mm to 80mm.

The advanced five plunger design offers significant benefits over traditional designs in terms of reliability, maintenance requirements and noise during operation. Because the load on each plunger is reduced in comparison to three plunger pumps of similar specification there is a 40% reduction in the fluid velocity per plunger which results in lower hydraulic noise. The crank is able to turn slower, which reduces mechanical wear and noise, while stroke lengths are longer, which leads to fewer reversals.

Overall the pump features a smoother pressure profile which reduces the impact of surges on other critical items of equipment within the system such as hoses and valves which means that the entire system offers increased reliability over competitors. However, despite RMI's 98% reliability record, unforeseen problems can still occur. Fortunately the S500 features a modular design which means that spare parts are readily available for all sizes and output capabilities; parts are stocked globally and available for quality inspections prior to installation where necessary.

The S500's crankshaft is manufactured from high tensile steel using advanced machining and drilling techniques for maximum durability. Reliability is further ensured thanks to precision ground gears, lead bronze big and small end bearings, stainless steel stuffing boxes and solid ceramic plungers with Kevlar seal packing. A selection of digital and analogue readouts are included for easy monitoring of internal pressures, temperatures, lube levels etc.

All the working parts on the pump are totally enclosed making is suitable for use in dust laden applications or other hazardous conditions. The system's connections are designed for flexible pipework to provide ease of installation and motors may be flange mounted, direct coupled or foot mounted depending on the application's requirements. The units are designed for minimum width and are suitable for portable applications; they are designed to operate on gradients up to 5Ëš.
