ROSIE COOPER MP EXPLORES HOW VIRIDOR IS DRIVING RECYCLING IN SKELMERSDALE

Member of Parliament for West Lancashire, Rosie Cooper recently saw first-hand how leading recycling and renewable energy company Viridor is helping to drive a more circular economy at the state-of-the-art facility in Skelmersdale. As the way the UK see's waste is changing there is an increasingly strong focus on being able to reuse and recycle material into new things.The Polymer Recycling Facility, in Skelmersdale receives over 3000 tonnes of plastic bottles each month (that's hundreds of thousands of bottles), using advanced optical sorting, washing and then grinding the bottles into flakes, this material is then sent to be made into new products including packaging trays for food and new cosmetics bottles.
Richard Jenkins, Viridor Regional Managing Director said: "Recycling in the UK is a real success story with great strides being made nationally each year to further boost recycling rates. Skelmersdale represents the most advanced remanufacturing within the Viridor network. The facility enables recycled plastic bottles to be turned into high quality plastic pellets and flakes, with the facility now in a positon where the majority of the products are retained within the UK and EU resource markets."
Rosie Cooper, Member of Parliament for West Lancashire said: "I found the visit to Viridor's Skelmersdale plant very informative being able to see how plastic bottles are given a new life rather than being sent to a landfill site after a single use. During the visit I was able to see how Viridor are using state-of-the-art technology to sift, sort and then reprocess this material so that it is able to re-enter the manufacturing sector once again. It was a pleasure to meet Richard Jenkins and his team to discuss the importance of operations such as this to enhance the UK's resource security whilst providing vital employment in Skelmersdale."
