Sorting minerals in Mexican mine with Atlas Copco’s E-Air V1100 compressors

In manganese mining, the difference between value and waste can come down to split?second precision. For the Mexican mining company Autlán, one of the world’s leading manganese producers, that precision is achieved in an automated sorting stage where timed bursts of compressed air separate high?grade ore from lower?quality stone. This demanding application requires a compressor that delivers fast response, stable pressure and reliable performance, making Atlas Copco’s E?Air V1100 compressor the ideal choice for the job.

Manganese may be a lesser?known element, but it is essential to modern industry. Used in the production of metal alloys and stainless steel, it also plays a key role in products such as beverage cans, batteries, paints, and fuels. At Autlán’s mining sites, producing high?quality manganese requires a stable and precisely controlled flow of compressed air that meets strict process and environmental requirements.

Compressed air requirements in manganese mining

Compressed air is particularly critical in the mineral sorting stage of manganese production. Autlán uses a classification machine that separates ore based on manganese content. Controlled bursts of compressed air remove stones with lower mineral concentration, ensuring that only higher?quality manganese ore continues through the process. This application requires clean and dry compressed air, with a temperature no more than 20?°C above ambient. To achieve reliable separation, the process demands a free air delivery of 45?Nm³/min at 10 bar.

Atlas Copco worked closely with Autlán to analyze the specific sorting application and define the optimal compressed air solution. The assessment revealed that continuous air supply was not necessary, as compressed air was only used intermittently during sorting. This insight made it possible to specify a solution that met performance requirements while improving energy efficiency and reducing operating costs.

Electric portable air compressor solution

Based on these findings, Autlán chose three E?Air V1100 VSD electric portable air compressors, with two units in operation and one serving as a backup. Designed for demanding outdoor and mining environments, the compressors required no fixed installation or compressor room. This eliminated the need for additional civil works and provided Autlán with a flexible and cost?effective compressed air solution.

Designed for harsh mining environments

The electric E?Air VSD compressors feature a leak?proof frame with 110% fluid containment, helping prevent spills and protect the surrounding environment. This was a key requirement for Autlán, as soil contamination at mining sites is strictly regulated. Additional design features such as encapsulated motor windings, an IP65?rated controller, an IP67 water?cooled drive, and a robust steel enclosure with a three?layer anti?corrosion paint system ensure reliable operation in dusty, outdoor conditions.

Clean and dry compressed air for mineral sorting

To guarantee optimal compressed air quality, Autlán also added an optional UD+ filter downstream of the aftercooler. This patented two?in?one coalescing filter removes oil aerosols, dust, and moisture from the compressed air. By delivering clean air with minimal pressure drop, the UD+ filter helps prevent nozzle clogging and maintains consistent performance while preserving overall system efficiency.

Variable speed drive technology improves efficiency

Powered by an integrated variable speed drive and permanent magnet motor, the E?Air V1100 VSD compressor requires low starting power and avoids the need to oversize the electrical supply. This technology delivers high efficiency, especially at partial load, ensuring that energy use closely follows the real?time compressed air demand of the application.

The compressors are equipped with Atlas Copco’s PACE technology, which allows operators to precisely adjust working pressure between 5 and 12 bar in 0.1?bar increments. Combined with the Smart Air Xc4004 controller, operators gain full visibility of pressure and flow on a clear seven?inch display, enabling easy monitoring and efficient operation. Integrated aftercoolers supplied as standard further ensure high?quality compressed air for demanding mining applications.

Reliable and sustainable compressed air for manganese production

By choosing electric portable air compressors with variable speed drive technology, Autlán secured a reliable and energy?efficient compressed air solution tailored to its process needs. The electric E?Air V1100 VSD compressors support consistent manganese production while helping reduce energy consumption and environmental impact in one of the world’s most demanding mining environments.
