Stars of industry and academia elected to the Royal Academy of Engineering

The Royal Academy of Engineering is delighted to announce the election of 59 new Fellows at its AGM this week, including one new Honorary Fellow and seven International Fellows.Lord Bamford, Chairman and Managing Director of JCB, advocate for engineering education and founder of the JCB Academy, has been elected an Honorary Fellow.
Other new Fellows from industry include Bob Dudley, Group Chief Executive of BP, Jaguar Land Rover CEO Dr Ralf Speth, Bombardier Vice President Michael Ryan and David Mackenzie, CEO of consulting engineers Flint & Neill.
Professor Mark Miodownik, researcher and broadcaster and Director of University College London's Institute of Making, also becomes a Fellow of the Academy.
New Fellows from academia include: Professor Patricia Connolly, Director of the Strathclyde Institute of Medical Devices, and Professor Pratibha Gai, leader of the Nanocentre at the University of York and 2013 L'Oreal-UNESCO For Woman in Science Awards European Laureate
Professor Steven Cowley, CEO of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, is elected for his outstanding contribution to the development of nuclear fusion, along with Dr Paul Howarth, Managing Director of the National Nuclear Laboratory.
Among the seven International Fellows elected this year are Dr Rick Rashid, Chief Research Officer at Microsoft, and mobile communications pioneer Dr Andrew Viterbi, co-founder of QualComm.
Also elected is Professor Jianyun Zhang, Director General of the Chinese Research Centre for Climate Change, who conducted hydraulic studies for the Three Gorges Dam.
Professor Dame Ann Dowling DBE FREng FRS, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, said: "Our newly elected Fellows bring an enormous breadth of expertise to the Academy, widening our collective scope and knowledge. I know that they will all make significant contributions to the Academy's activities in their time as Fellows and we look forward to working with them to create benefit for society through engineering."
