Sumitomo (SHI) Demag exposes future of LSR applications at K-2019

At K-2019, Sumitomo (SHI) Demag Plastics Machinery GmbH will showcase the latest developments in Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) moulding.According to a new study by Polaris Market Research , the global silicone elastomers markets is forecast to be valued at USD 9.34 billion by 2026. This rapid growth means that LSR is fast becoming the material of choice for specific applications in the digital electronics and automotive segments. Thomas Kottler, Project Manager for LSR at Sumitomo (SHI) Demag attributes its popularity to LSRs' thermal properties and the high level of design freedom it offers.
Thomas explains: "LSR is fairly unique material in that it remains flexible and elastic down to -50°C, yet also retains its properties up to 200°C. As a result, LSR is starting to be used more extensively in encapsulated electronic components, cables etc. where insulation is required for user safety."
Additionally, LSR is a good material for automotive electronic components, such as headlights, sealings and engine components. It also enables manufacturers to achieve component geometries and technical features not previously possible, such as the moulding of complex optical surfaces onto a light guide for a matrix headlight.
Sumitomo (SHI) Demag will demonstrate its technical LSR know-how and the process of moulding a component for a matrix light at K-2019 on a specially configured IntElect 130. "LSR provides very good optical features, withstands high temperatures, offers a high chemical and UV resistance and high electrical isolation capabilities," adds Thomas.
Combining top-level performance with an outstanding environmental footprint, the latest IntElect series from Sumitomo (SHI) Demag uses 20% less energy than its competition without compromising on performance. Many of the IntElect's enhancements can be attributed to the machine's improved drive system, which is geared towards top dynamics, precision and repeatability. The new motor design is shorter and features new types of spindles.
"Moulding LSR requires high precision and process stability," highlights Thomas. The latest IntElect systems are designed to achieve extremely precise shot control and also handle the low-viscosity material. Units feature a specially designed screw, ranging from 14mm to 45mm, a modified plasticising unit, a shut off system specifically designed for LSR and a spring loaded non-return valve to achieve the highest processing consistency.
Its low viscosity means there are advantages and challenges when processing LSR. Thomas explains: "Being able to form complex geometries and perfectly replicate micro-structured surfaces is a key advantage of LSR. However, there is a tendency for flashes caused by excess material to occur at parting lines of the mould (where the two mould halves meet), or other shut off areas."
These flash issues can be mitigated and controlled by addressing the mould clearance. For example, an integrated and controlled vacuum system within the machine can help to prevent air bubbles or burn marks. Additional features, such as a stiff platen like Sumitomo (SHI) Demag's Centre Press Platen, ensures high rigidity and uniform distribution of the clamp force to ensure more balanced pressure distribution. A robust linear guidance system for the platen or controlling the mould opening and closing sequence with a built-in staged clamp force can also reduce the risk of flash when moulding LSR components.
To safeguard the mould, a sensor safety system - known as activeProtect - offers a fast response mould protection system on the IntElect range. Additionally, IntElect users can benefit from enhanced ejector control technology.
A new and innovative preferred partnership in the LSR market will be unveiled by Sumitomo (SHI) Demag closer to the exhibition.
