The Dairy Membrane Filtration Map

Simple schematic to inspire practical dairy processing decisions

GEA Filtration has developed an innovative and inspiring Dairy Map. The Dairy Map highlights where membrane filtration technologies can be applied in various kind of dairy products and dairy processes.

The Dairy Map is in the form of an easy-to-follow processing block diagram. Raw milk comes into the diagram at the top and "end" products (Seen from a membrane filtration point of view) are listed on both sides of the diagram. On the lower part of the Dairy Map is shown the processing steps in different whey and permeate products, in which membrane filtration technologies play a central role.

All major processing steps such as centrifugal separation, heat treatment and fermentation etc. are also shown on the diagram in order to create total overview. By simply following the arrow shaped lines on the Dairy Map, can the required processing steps be found for many different dairy products and sub-products.

Ulrik Lund Jakobsen, Director for GEA Filtration in Skanderborg, said that the idea for the map came from customers. "Many of our customers wanted to expand to produce new products but were unsure of how their existing facilities could be used or what new equipment they might need," he explained. "The Dairy Map shows them every step of the production process and makes it clear which products they should consider for diversification."

GEA hopes the Dairy Map will be widely used throughout the industry and a source of inspiration for plant managers who wish to maximise their plant capacity and profitability with the minimum of capital expenditure. The Dairy Map forms the centre spread of the company's Membrane filtration in the dairy industry brochure or can be viewed online at http://www.geafiltration.com/library/GEA_Filtration_brochures.asp
