Two into one will go

New Y-splitter cables from ifm electronicConnectivity lies at the heart of automation, especially as increasing numbers of sensors with integrated M12 plugs are chosen, and the new Y-cables from ifm electronic aim to make connection of these sensors easier and more flexible. Choosing the right connectors is the best way to ensure best performance from sensors.
Two distinct styles are on offer, in the EVC range of oil-proof connectors, essentially general-purpose connectors, and also in the EVT range of water-resistant connectors aimed at food industry environments. The clear advantage of a Y-splitter is the ability to utilise redundant ports in distribution boxes, reducing the overall wiring cost. This is achieved because the industry-standard (EN 61076-2) M12 connector invariably has at least four possible connections, but most sensors only need three - by commoning the power, the fourth pole can be used for a second sensor with the use of the Y-splitter. The result: two sensors into one port means an 8-way splitter box can be used for sixteen sensors.
ifm electronic understands that a compromise in the connector can compromise the sensor performance, so offers connectors for different environments. Following the rest of the EVT connector range, the EVT Y-splitters from ifm electronic are characterised by high-grade stainless-steel components, EPDM O-ring, high shock and vibration resistance, a temperature range up to 100° C and IP ratings including IP69K.
The EVC range Y-splitters also feature the high shock and vibration resistance but the materials, e.g. PUR cable, Viton O-ring are more suited to machine environments
where oils and coolants abound. The IP is therefore also tested in coolant rather than water.
Both ranges can be supplied in a choice of lengths up to a maximum 5m, with straight or angled sensor sockets. The angled sockets can also include LED's for power and sensor status indication, which are uniquely embedded in a dark background material for greater contrast.
ifm is committed to working closely with its customers to develop products which precisely match their needs, and the company provides expert, readily accessible technical support to help users maximise the benefits they gain from ifm products.
