WEG technologies help limit exposure to hazardous and toxic contaminants in laboratories

The National Centre for Physical and Technological Sciences, a cutting-edge scientific R&D centre in Vilnius, Lithuania, has installed WEG variable frequency drives in its laboratory fume hoods to help limit exposure to hazardous and toxic fumes, vapours or dustsThe National Centre for Physical and Technological Sciences (NCPTS) is a 25,000 square metre scientific R&D centre, inaugurated in Vilnius, Lithuania at the beginning of 2016. Developed and built by Vilnius University and its four partners, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, the Semiconductor Physics Institute, the Institute of Chemistry and the Institute of Physics, this ambitious project was designed to deliver a world-class, state-of-the-art scientific research facility. The NCPTS is focused on three areas of research: laser technology; material science and nanotechnology; and semiconductor physics and electronics.
To maximise the quality of its scientific research and experiments, as well as to ensure employee safety, WEG variable frequency drives (VFDs) have been installed in its laboratory fume hoods (also known as fume cupboards or fume closets), which provide ventilation designed to limit exposure to hazardous or toxic fumes, vapours or dusts. The NCPTS complex covers 25,000 square meters and has 250 laboratory facilities, with 150 units of WEG VFDs installed into fume hoods in 121 rooms.
Taking into consideration the individual research areas and requirements of each laboratory, three different models of WEG frequency drives have been installed: CFW501, CFW701 and CFW11, with supplied expansion modules providing even more versatility for the equipment.
WEG's CFW501 (power levels from 0.18 to 7.5kW) and CFW701 (1.1 to 132kW) variable speed drives are purpose-designed for use with asynchronous motors in applications such as air quality and air conditioning. These drives feature an internal RFI filter, low harmonic distortion performance, soft PLC functions, advanced PID, conformal coating as standard and the ability to communicate in a variety of protocols, including BACnet MS/TP, Metasys N2 and Modbus-RTU.
CFW11 drives (covering power levels from 1.1 to 63kW) are ideal for use with both permanent magnet motors and induction motors. These drives include innovations such as Vectrue Technology®, which allows WEG inverters to combine V/F, sensorless vector, VVW and vector (with encoder) control techniques - all in one product. This capability not only helps to increase productivity, but offers efficiency ratings greater than 97%. Further CFW11 innovations include Optimal Braking®, a special braking method in vector control mode that provides an effective alternative to using braking resistors, and Optimal Flux®, which eliminates the need for independent ventilation or motor oversizing in applications with constant torque loads at low speeds, saving both space and cost.
Supply and installation of the VFDs was managed by WEG's official distributor in Lithuania, W.B.I.S., who selected the ideal VFDs, matching the most appropriate features to each application. Working in close cooperation with WEG factories in Brazil, W.B.I.S. has also implemented nine cleanrooms, built according to ISO 5, ISO 6 and ISO 7 class requirements.
