Worldwide web celebrates 25th anniversary

This Saturday (6 August) marks the 25th anniversary of the worldwide web going live to the world. There was no fanfare back then though with most people not even knowing what the internet was.Commenting, Dr Mike Short from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), said: "From humble beginnings when very few of us had even heard of the web, it is now estimated to be used by close to 3.5 billion people worldwide.
"It has transformed our lives over the last quarter of a century and is truly one of the most important inventions of our time.
"It is now very hard to imagine our lives now without access to the web. The majority of us now rely heavily on our smartphones for a whole host of information and services including travel directions, video, messaging and shopping, most of which have only come about with web evolution and adoption, and were not available with the first voice only mobiles.
"Since its launch, the web has constantly evolved and changed the way we interact with other people. The benefits to society and business today are difficult to quantify, but are also set to see continuous change as wearable devices and the Internet of Things become more popular, and smart devices become even smarter.
"Thank you, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, for your pioneering work on the worldwide web for us all."
