As part of a recent modernization program, the University of Television and Film in Munich opted to invest in a modular safety system from the Siemens Industry Automation Division. The University's four new film and TV studios now benefit from an industrially tried and tested safety system, the 3RK3, to control their lighting technology.
The University of Television and Film (HFF) in Munich now occupies a new building right in the heart of the city. Arri Lighting Solution GmbH, the equipment provider responsible for technical equipment of the four studios, opted in favor of the modular safety system (MSS) Sirius 3RK3 from Siemens. Using this system as a basis, Arri has developed a totally new and complex safety concept which is the first of its kind for this type of application. Key aspects of the development were the high level of flexibility and efficiency made possible by targeted modular expansion of the system, and also the operating ease and simplicity of the MSS ES software. This provides a variety of diagnostic information, for instance, which simplifies the job of the studio technician on site. The application also fulfills the relevant industrial safety standards SIL 2 (safety integrity level) and SIL 3 in accordance with EN/IEC 62061 and PL d (performance level) and PL e in accordance with EN ISO 138491. The installed Siemens technology makes for substantially simplified troubleshooting: If a fault occurs, for instance, the affected area is instantly detected. Space-saving compact starter Sirius 3RA6 switch the drives for the telescopic systems, light rigging and curtain lowering. A Sirius 3UG monitoring relay integrated in the safety concept ensures correct operation of the lighting technology.
The university has two TV and two film studios available for student training, all fitted with state-of-the-art equipment such as perfect lighting and illumination provided by around 200 LED and daylight spots as well as LED background lighting. The studios also feature electrically traversable telescopic systems and light rigging, permitting a wide scope for adjustment and traversing of lighting systems and technical equipment. Ensuring compliance with the stipulations of the new Machine Directive means that not only the experienced engineers but also the students are required to get to grips with this com- plex equipment. Learning to operate film and TV equipment from a central switch panel is part and parcel of their course requirement.
