ROBERTS MART IS FLEXING ITS EUROPEAN MUSCLE

Roberts Mart & Co Ltd, renowned for its flexible printed packaging for the UK food sector, is making significant strides into the continental market after a ground-breaking agreement to supply a major European cereal products manufacturer.

In a joint venture with commercial agents RJQ Packaging, the Leeds-based company's reputation for high quality printing, quick turnaround times and exceptional service clinched the contract to supply printed packs for the biggest dried food processor in France.

For its first major continental contract, Roberts Mart is providing flexo printed film for 500g and 1kg size packs of processed rice, lentils and dried vegetables for the customer's private label clients, which include some of Europe's top supermarkets.

To secure the contract, Roberts Mart spent 18 months developing reduced weight packaging in order to lower the cost base while also meeting European environmental initiatives and has, so far, supplied 20 different designs of printed film on various laminated substrates in order to cater for different shelf-life expectancies.

The new customer was impressed with Roberts Mart's very high quality printing, competitive pricing and rapid delivery times to the Continent and cited its willingness to invest, including in new high definition printing plates, as a major advantage in serving the European market.

Roberts Mart has been servicing the UK's food and drink industry's flexible packaging needs for many years, from pork pies and frozen food to bottled water, but this breakthrough signposts plans for a major expansion into overseas markets.

The family-run company's printed flexible packaging is ideal for a variety of dried foods, including rice, fruit, nuts, seeds, beans and pulses. Other key factors are the materials' versatility and cost-effectiveness, as well as being quicker to pack and easier to store.

Roberts Mart's high performance films deliver the full operational characteristics that are required in terms of clarity, gloss and strength, with the added benefit of minimising gauge. It is also able to print up to 10 colours and recently invested in a state-of-the-art Fischer & Krecke 14S printing press, which enabled the company to win this contract against competition offering more traditional gravure and offset printing.

The company has a proactive strategy of continuous technical development in flexible packaging provision in order to offer improved performance materials and printing techniques that provide tangible benefits - advantages that are now available to top food manufacturers in Europe and further afield.
